I’m currently in the planning phase of a kitchen remodel and I’m stuck at a crossroads. I’ve looked at some high-end modular kitchen setups at the big-box stores, but I’m worried about the "one size fits all" approach. My kitchen has some tricky corners and I really want to maximize every inch of storage.

I’ve been leaning towards a custom kitchen design so I can choose specific materials and get a layout that actually fits my workflow. For those of you who went custom:

• Did you find the durability significantly better than pre-fab?

• How did you handle the design process—did you hire a specialized firm or work with a general contractor?

I’d love to hear your experiences (and see some photos if you have them!). I want to make sure the investment is worth it for the long run.
